ID Requirements

Acceptable ID

Your ID must meet several criteria to be acceptable.

The ID you provide:

  • must be the original document
  • can’t be expired
    • if it doesn’t have an expiration date, it must have been issued within the last 5 years
  • must have been issued by one of the following:
    • a provincial or territorial government of Canada
    • the Government of Canada
    • another state or federal government (e.g., Government of California, Government of Australia)
  • must contain all the following:
    • your photo
    • your first and last name
    • a distinct identification number

If you do not have acceptable id, you may designate a person to be your agent (designated agent). 

  • you must know your designated agent for at least one year
  • the designated agent must show their acceptable id
  • the consent and statutory declaration portions of an application form must be completed
