Information for consumers

Business goes bust, now what?

When a business closes their doors, you may have questions about:

  • deposits paid for good or services that were not delivered
  • unused gift cards, certificates, or store credits
  • reward programs or points, or
  • extended warranties.

If you have questions about your dealings with a business that is no longer operating or is in a process of closing:

  • contact Alberta Consumer Protection Line at 1-877-427-4088 for information on consumer rights or to learn how to file a consumer complaint
  • contact your credit card company for credit purchases of goods and services that will not be delivered
  • visit the website of the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy of Canada for information on bankruptcy proceedings
  • seek legal advice, if necessary.
