Fraud Charges Laid Against Calgary Travel Agents
May 19, 2004
Edmonton...The Alberta government has charged Sergio Chacon and Amada Romero, operators of Concord Travel Inc., with fraud over $5,000 for failing to provide travel services for which they were paid.
Concord Travel Inc. entered into travel agreements with consumers who often paid cash in advance for airline tickets. In December 2003, the company filed for bankruptcy, leaving several consumers without tickets. Individuals who have purchased airline tickets with Concord Travel Inc. are asked to contact Alberta Government Services toll-free at 1-877-427-4088.
In general, consumers who are planning a vacation should keep in mind the following tips:
- avoid paying cash and whenever possible, use a credit card for an airline ticket;
- check with your credit card company to see if they offer protection in cases where the merchant doesn't provide the service;
- ask for your ticket to be delivered prior to the departure date;
- check to see if your trip cancellation insurance covers the failure of the travel agent, and
- check with the Better Business Bureau for any previous complaints against your travel agent.
Chacon and Romero are scheduled to appear in Provincial Court in Calgary on June 16, 2004.
